Welcome! I’m so happy you’ve decided to join us in The Sewing Sphere!

I miss the days when the online sewing community was about sewing and general fun. Connections were easier to make and friendships easier to build before algorithms jumbled everything up and only let some people see what you shared. I want to build a welcoming community that enjoys sharing many varieties of creativity and talent – not just sewing. We all have lives outside of sewing, and we can all inspire and learn from each other in so many ways.

I love learning, and I have discovered a love for teaching too. Useful skills should be passed on to those who want to learn, and not guarded like magical secrets. There is plenty of room for everyone. And I truly believe that the more people who understand the time and skill that goes into sewing (and making in general), the more the rest of the world will come to value what we do.

I’d like this little sphere of the internet to be a place where people come to get away from the daily stress and hostility that is so prevalent on all the other social media platforms. For now, I just want to create a space to hang out with friends and perhaps do some live chats. In the future, I may offer premium content on this Locals platform, such as sewing videos/lessons. Let me know if you have ideas or suggestions for any other types of content you’d like to see from me.

Please take a moment to read the Community Guidelines under the https://sewingsphere.locals.com/about and you can read & give a "thumbs up" to any of the public posts. If you'd like to join in the commenting & posting, please subscribe (if you haven't already) under "manage support" in a browser (NOT the Locals app) – then introduce yourself to everyone because we’d love to get to know you!

Studio video tour!

I spent the day priming things for paint and then I remembered to shoot a quick video. #SewingStudioBuild

Paint!

I started cutting all the edges while Janet was away yesterday morning. When she got back after lunch, she pulled out a roller and started filling in. I'll put a pic below in the comments. #SewingStudioBuild

Time-lapse floor install (part 2)

We broke for lunch and then came back with a portal ac unit plugged in to an extention cord from the house. Can't wait until they finished hooking up all the electrical and we have the mini split cooling the room for us - it was stupid humid today! #SewingStudioBuild

The fabric I hate to love!

Why do you have to be so pretty, brocade? I love you, but you are so fussy to work with!

I made a rub-off dress... the only change I made was to increase the width of the waistband from 2" to 3", which I am more-or-less satisfied with. I'd do a few things, construction-wise, differently next time, but this is an easy, comfortable dress.

The original is from Talbots.

It’s been awhile since I’ve had something to show, but I’m finally getting the pictures up! Both of these were from the Paloma pattern in the Itch to Stitch “Sew Beautiful” book. I did the top first to test the pattern, and tried to add some length to the sleeves, since 3/4 length only works here about 3 to 4 days of the year! I apparently underestimated the length I needed to add, but I had to cut crosswise even to add this much, so I couldn’t have done more.

For the dress, I did add more sleeve length (slightly overestimated this time). I also added ties to the neck and pockets, though in retrospect, I probably should have put them in higher. Based on the shirt, I’d thought putting them in the top part would be too high. So I inserted them in the first ruffle layer and it is maybe a bit too low.
Overall, though, I think this was a worthwhile pattern to play with.
